Math skills meet painting skills...

About a month ago Hooper asked me to help her out with a client, the convo went a little something like this:

H: Hey- I have a kitchen floor I want you to paint for my client.
Me: okay, what do you want?
H: Just something simple, I'll send you what I'm thinking
Me: how big is the kitchen?
H: Average size (or 20x14!)

I wouldn't really call this pattern "simple". It might have been simple for the person whose math skills go  beyond 3rd grade.  My brain hurt after making the pattern and mapping it out and that was even with help! (A LOT OF HELP- thank you John and Jodie!) But, I am so glad I got to do it and the end result is amazing in the home. (we will have to show you more pics of the house later)

After the floor was done our painter extraordinaire put a high gloss sealer on it and the result was shiny perfection and will hold up in this high traffic area!

I am thinking of redoing my own kitchen floor (Its on it's 3rd look). I might try the same pattern...

Or maybe this one:
The more beat up the better… right? With 4 kids and 2 dogs this floor would be great in mi casa.
Painted kitchen floors, laundry room floors, foyer floors etc… are a great option for older homes. A painted floor breaks up all the wood as well as hiding flaws that older homes floors tend to have.(Can you tell I have an older house?)

Anyhoo, what do you think? Like our latest project? Need me to paint your floor? I think my brain has recovered and I'm ready for the next project! -A

Happy Friday!

Backsplash Makes a Splash

My little kitchen at our rental in Bald Head Island got a make over last weekend. As you know, I had already painted the butcher block counters to look like marble, see here.
I wanted to add more white and loved this long white glossy subway tile from Southeastern Tile Connection.  Check it out...
I had it stacked to mimic the ceiling and I love the lines of it. It brightens up the kitchen even more.

The floating shelves make the kitchen feel open (vs. upper cabinets). By painting the shelves white, they make the kitchen feel larger.

It may be small, but it packs a lot of punch!
What Summer projects are you working on?

Another Reason Coastal Living is one of my favorite mags

Coastal Living just announced its
10 Happiest Seaside Town for 2015 on
Here's how they picked the winners (courtesy of Coastal Living).

We began with every place we've lauded as a Dream Town, and took your nominations online, too. From there, we looked at the rank on the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, percentage of clear and sunny days, healthiness of beaches, commute times, walkability, crime ratings, standard of living and financial well being of the locals, geographic diversity, and our editors' assessment of each town's "coastal vibe." The result: an amazing list for 2015 from every coast!

They picked one of my favorite places! It is just an hour from Wilmington by car and a short boat ride from Bald Head.
It is quaint, beautiful and this town (pop.3,600) is full of charm, old oaks, great shopping and some delicious food.
We are at Bald Head this week on a family vacation so we packed up the boat and headed on over...
If you didn't already know... drumroll... the Happiest Seaside Town in America is Southport, NC!

We stopped at Provision Company for THE BEST SEAFOOD for lunch. They have the best peel-and-eat shrimp and it is the perfect boat pit stop.

The kids (and Teddy) had a blast.
Did I mention they have delicious food! We love to head over to The Pharmacy for date night.
And when not on a date (i.e., I'm dragging my kids from the BHI ferry and may just need to swing by and pick up a "small" table or dresser... Rebecca's has some fun finds (consignment furniture and accessories).
It is the most picturesque town. If you haven't stopped by, you should...
Congrats Southport! You are America's Happiest Seaside town!
Great choices Coastal Living (there are lots of good ones listed) so check them out at online Coastal Living or in the July issue on stands soon....

Happy Camper...

Hey all… Don't pass out… this is Ann. I know, I know, it's been a long time since you have heard from me. Without a lot of detail let's just say the song that has played through my head since
November 1st is… (que music)…
"I get knocked down, but I get up again… you're never gonna keep me down…" Thank you Chumbawamba.

Anyhoo, I am alive and well and blogging again. I know our millions,  thousands, hundreds of readers are thrilled…

This was not exactly in my "where do you see yourself in 20 years" college paper but here I am and as I learn my new normal I have been willing to try new things...

That is a tent…You sleep in it…outside…It's called "camping" (Who knew?!?!)

While I was camping Hooper txtd me:
Hooper:  Hey are you having a good weekend?
Me:  yes, can't txt tho.. on Masonboro camping
Hooper: Why?

Hmmm… So… for Memorial day weekend we went to Masonboro with a bunch of soccer families. Lucky for me they knew what they were doing…
(yes, those are air mattresses and down pillows…)

We had smores by the fire each night…

There were talent shows… the little girls actually choreographed a dance. The boys … well… the boys behaved like boys.. enough said.

But … We did it, we made it. Now don't get all excited and ask me to go camping. I learned "camping" is such a strong word… If you want to take me to an island, help me set up my tent, take 6 boat loads of provisions for 2 days including hot meals, air mattresses, and any other luxury to make me feel like I am home,  then YES!! I am a camper…

We were all "happy campers" and could not have asked for better weather, company or fun! Looking forward to next year… -A

Big Impact, Small Price Tag: Tip Tuesday

Did you know that for under $10 you could change out some knobs on a pair of side tables, for a little more, change out the knobs in a bathroom or better yet...
your entire kitchen without breaking the bank?

Today, I'm working on a photo shoot for a local magazine. This is one of my favorite projects. It has tons of great elements (can't wait to show you), but we cut costs (without cutting style) by bargain shopping hardware.
Here are just a few of my favorite knobs and go to "jewelry" for your cabinets. These little gems can be found at... wait for it...
Hobby Lobby
You heard me. They have millions. Ok, maybe not millions, but A LOT

How great it this simple polished nickel knob? It's great for a kitchen and for under $3, you can afford to change them all!
I adore these agate "Geo Mineral" knobs from Cost Plus World Market. They are a steal at $9.98 a pair!
Here's a tip! Make a big impact for a small price with these beauties!
